UNISTOLE™ P Polyolefinic Primer/Adhesive

UNISTOLE™ P is a liquid primer for coating and bonding polypropylene (PP) and various engineering plastics, rubber and other materials, which do not readily bond other materials. It is widely used as adhesion promoting agent for substrates such as PP, TPO, TPE, EPDM, Nylon 6, RIM Urethane, PBT, FRP, ABS, EVA, Polyimide, Modified PPO and their blends.

  • An easily handled one-pack primer that dries at normal temperatures so "wet-on-wet" coating is possible.
  • Appropriate for coating and bonding almost all paints and adhesives and all types of PP.
  • Suitable as a primer for coating and bonding engineering plastics such as nylon, polyester resin and FRP, rubbers such as EPDM, metals and other materials that do not readily bond.
  • Possesses excellent secondary adhesion and excellent gasoline resistance.
  • A UNISTOLE P coated film is flexible even at low temperatures, and articles coated with it exhibit excellent flex resistance and impact resistance.

In the automotive industry, the PP coating material is used to prime, seal, and bond because it works with all types of PP. In addition, this non-chlorine based polyolefin varnish is compatible with virtually all types of paints and can be colorized.

The use of this versatile one-pack primer can improve coating application efficiency because it dries at normal temperatures so "wet-on-wet" coating is possible and remains flexible even at cold temperatures. In addition, this auto OEM coating material's exceptional secondary adhesion and excellent gasoline resistance means the automotive primer bonds and insulates interior and exterior automotive applications equally well.

UNISTOLE is an ideal PP bonding and coating material for applying decorative, protective or functional coatings on automotive parts because of its outstanding adhesion to numerous synthetic materials.

UNISTOLE™ R Polyolefinic Primer/Adhesive

UNISTOLE™ R is a modified polyolefin dispersed in a hydrocarbon-based solvent using polyolefin modification and dispersion technology developed by Mitsui Chemicals. The material is used as an adhesive for bonding metals to polyolefins, such as bonding metal foil and PP for retort, PTP and easy peel packaging.

Metal foil when coated with this modified polyolefin can be thermally bonded to PP film or sheet

Coating Process

Coating Process

There are several chlorine free grades of UNISTOLE R which can be used with basic equipment such as gravure, roll coaters and sprays.

  • Excellent adhesion to various metals.
  • Exceptional heat resistance and heat resistant adhesion.
  • Superb resistance to retort treatment.
  • Useable with simple equipment such as gravure coaters, roll coaters and sprays.
  • UNISTOLE™ R contains no chlorine.

  • Adhesive for bonding metal foil and a polyolefin such as aluminum foil and PP film to make retort packages, PTP packages, easy peal packages, etc.
  • Metal coating agent (bonding of metal by extruding PP onto it, automotive parts, etc.).
  • Modifier when added to paints, adhesives, printing inks, since it improves adhesion to PP.

    Olefin Varnish XP

Mitsui Chemicals offers a line of Modified-Olefin-Based Varnish. Olefin Varnish XP includes four grades. XP012 is the standard. XP002 has the lowest tackiness and the highest transparency and XP102 and XP112 have improved thermal resistance over XP002 and XP012. You can also use them in two pack curing system by adding HEXAMETHYLENE DIISOCYANATE (HDI) polyisocyanates which are Isocyanate curing agents, in order to improve film strength and adhesiveness.

    Olefin Varnish XP

With excellent thermal adhesion, low tackiness, and high elongation, Olefin Varnish XP reduces material costs and improves end product robustness.  The line’s low temperature processability and tackiness are its key distinguishing features.

    Excellent Thermal Adhesion

This varnish for adhesion has excellent thermal adhesion at approximately 100°C. XP012 shows excellent adhesiveness on a range of substrate materials, from hard-PP, soft-PP, ABS, Polycarbonate, PMMA, Acryl, PET, PPS, glass and metals (such as aluminum). In addition, cured XP012 also shows improved adhesiveness on polycarbonate/ABS alloy. XP002 has a more limited application, with excellent adhesiveness on Soft-PP and select metals only.

    Peel Strength on Various Materials

This varnish facilitates excellent adhesiveness at low heat sealing temperature. The following chart shows that heat sealing below 100°C can yield more than 10N/cm peel strength.

Peel Strength on Hard-PP at Various Heat-Sealing Temperature

The following chart shows the thermal resistance performance at various temperatures. The line has 10N/cm peel strength even at 80°C.

    Peel Strength on Soft-PP at 110℃ , 80℃ and r.t.

    Low Tackiness

Compared to conventional chlorinated PP or an acrylic adhesive, XP002 and XP012 have lower tackiness, even at temperatures below 50°C.

    Low Tackiness

Due to the line’s low tackiness, a transparent, homogenous and tack-free flexible film can be obtained at room temperature.

    High Elongation

The varnish can maintain superior adhesion performance at high elongation.  Testing has shown that adhesion performance is maintained even at 250-500% elongation.  These results indicate that it can be used for vacuum pressure forming to achieve surface decoration of 3D forms with overlaid decorated plastic films.

    High Elongation

Resistance to Solvents and Hot Water

XP002 exhibits good resistance to various solvents such as IPA, ethanol, toluene, and MEK.  The line is also resistant to hot water at 60°C.

Resistance to Solvents and Hot Water

The low temperature processability and tackiness enhance cost effectiveness of product development while maintaining robust finished properties. The suggested applications include:

    • Plastic films such as PET
    • Hot melt adhesion for vaccum pressure forming
    • Primer for olefin substrates
    • Ink binders
